MANASSAS, Va. —The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative took five high school students on an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., June 11-15, during the 53rd annual National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Youth Tour. The students, who live in NOVEC’s service territory, joined 1,800 other co-op students from across the U.S. to see government in action.

NOVEC’s Youth Tour Students:

Thomas Anton, Robinson Secondary School, Fairfax County

Albert Kodua, Osbourn Park High School, Prince William County

Joseph Love, Patriot High School, Prince William County

Sarah Rackoski, John Champe High School, Loudoun County
Sophia Willis, Robinson Secondary School, Fairfax County

The students toured Capitol Hill and met with U.S. Reps. Gerald Connolly and Rob Wittman. They also visited historical and cultural sites in the nation’s capital, including Arlington National Cemetery, National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the Newseum. The tour included a twilight cruise on the Potomac River, a Washington Nationals baseball game, and The Sound of Music opening night at the Kennedy Center.

Since Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson inspired the Youth Tour idea in the late 1950s, NRECA has brought more than 60,000 high school students from across the country to Washington to interact with their U.S. congressional representatives, learn more about history and energy, and sightsee.

Youth Tour 2017

“Youth Tour is an amazing experience that anyone will have a blast doing,” said Anton. “I met so many great people from around the country and learned so much about our nation’s government and history.”

“Our youth are our future, and we’re proud to continue giving them the tools to succeed,” said Blair Cirulli, NOVEC’s Youth Tour coordinator and chaperone.
