MANASSAS, Va. — Anika Karnam, the 9-year-old daughter of Raghav and Sanchita Karnam of Centreville, Virginia, has won “Best of Show” in the Cooperative Living magazine’s 2018 Youth Art Contest. The Karnams and the parents of four other winning artists are members of Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative, NOVEC.
Karnam, a rising fourth grader at Centreville Elementary School, used colored pencils to create her winning entry. It depicts herself snorkeling among tropical fish and coral.
“Anika has loved snorkeling ever since we took family vacations to St. Lucia and Barbados,” explained her mother.
Staff members at the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives, publisher of Cooperative Living, judged entries from more than 200 student artists throughout Virginia. The judges selected 15 winners in kindergarten through fifth grade, including the five Northern Virginia students.
“Our judges knew they had a Best-in-Show winner when they saw Anika’s detailed submission,” said Cooperative Living Editor Bill Sherrod, who noted that her younger sister was a grade winner in the 2017 contest.
“We started the Youth Art Contest to encourage youthful creativity and give kids a chance to show their art to the magazine’s 1.25 million readers,” Sherrod explained.
